We are so excited to introduce our first decodable reader for beginning readers, regardless of age!
Hats and Bats is a unique decodable reader that focuses on short a words within word family, rhyming patterns. 106 pages.
Our Unique Learners Reading System has a special design for students who have difficulty learning to read with sight word based programs or traditional phonics programs.
Hats and Bats is a unique decodable reader that introduces only a couple of letter sounds at a time. Phonics charts of letter sounds are integrated into the book. Hats and Bats introduces the short a CVC phonics words in rhyming word families throughout the whole book. Only two or three high frequency sight words are introduced in each unit. Stories include ONLY words or word patterns that have already been introduced. Very few pages have illustrations so that students who tend to rely on picture clues can learn to attend to the printed words on the page.
The teacher instruction pages can help you to know best how to use the word pages and stories without complicated lesson plans. Take the pace of your student. Use choral reading or guided reading strategies if necessary. You can use the word pages for spelling. Incorporate multisensory spelling activities in your phonics and reading lesson time. Stories progress slowly enough for the most severely struggling readers have plenty of practice without getting stuck with stories that have too many sight words or that introduce too many phonics rules. Young precocious readers can progress quickly through the stories.
You can use our Letter Sounds and Phonics Charts and Cards, Games, Workbooks, and other Reading materials for students with moderate to severe dyslexia, autism, and other reading disabilities. Whether your student has a formal diagnosis or not, you will find the Unique Learners Readers to be a handy tool to help your student to make progress in decoding and reading smoothly. Watch for additional levels to be released soon!
You can also use our decodable readers as a supplement to any Orton-Gillingham phonics program.
The format for this file is a 5.5×8.5 booklet. Print on regular 8.5×11 inch copy paper. I print mine with the printer settings on “bookletize.” You can either tape bind, spiral bind, or hole punch to assemble the booklet.
