Cheery Checkers – Vocab Closed Syllables VC/CV

$4.00

Cheery Checkers is a brightly colored game of checkers that works on Closed Syllables with the VC/CV pattern. The set includes the full-color folder game, movers, worksheets, and syllable cards. The set includes 25 pages.

Cheery Checkers is a game of checkers with bright colors and Closed Syllable words. My students LOVE to play checkers and will practice decoding multisyllable words over and over again just to play! This game works on Closed Syllables with the VC/CV pattern. 25 pages total.

When students are first transitioning from one-syllable words to learning syllable division rules, they need plenty of practice finding the vowels and dividing closed syllables. This set has loads of practice in a game, worksheets, and syllable matching cards.

GAME

The game has a cover with directions, a 2-page checker gameboard to mount to a letter-sized file folder. Checkers are included for you to print and assemble according to several options.

NOTE: This game takes longer than the 15 minute limit of our typical file folder games, so if time is limited, just set a kitchen timer for the time available. The winner is the player with the most checkers left on the board. Also, 2 versions of the game are provided: one with the same words facing both directions and one with different words to provide additional practice for students who are able to visually process more easily. (Most of my students have been fine with different words.) So, in actuality, you get 3 games in all!

WORKSHEETS

This set has 8 worksheets for students to divide syllables, read isolated words, and copy words. The worksheets are set up so you can fold the page in half for students to practice writing words from short-term memory. You can also use the worksheets as workbox tasks for multisensory spelling activities, like shaving cream or a sand tray.

SYLLABLE MATCHING CARDS

This set has 8 pages of syllable matching cards. If you teach a phonics-based approach and are introducing morphology, cut the cards apart and present one page of cards at a time for students to build closed syllable word lists. The syllable matching cards are great for homeschool task boxes or special education literacy centers.
