R-controlled vowels require loads of practice in both decoding and spelling! We just updated Chubby Monkey, one of our most favorite phonics folder games! Chubby Monkey includes a mix of r-controlled words with er, ir, and ur in a large, clear font for kids with dyslexia or other learning disabilities. The unique gameboard makes kids attend to the spelling patterns while they feed the monkey in the rainforest canopy. Extra worksheets are provided for kids to practice circling rules, decoding, and spelling those tricky r-controlled vowels. You may want to laminate the worksheets and use them as dry erase task cards or place them in a literacy center with a sand tray or other multisensory practice activity. The r-controlled words used in the game and worksheets are compatible with most Orton-Gillingham or other multisensory, systematic phonics programs.
