Cognitive Skills for Learning

Each one is unique. Our genetics make us unique. Our experiences in life make us unique. All students are unique learners!

Yet, our brains work in similar ways. We are constantly seeking out sensory experiences that send messages to our brains. We are constantly learning whether we try or not. However, our brains use about 7 big category cognitive skills for learning academics. Within these 7 cognitive skills areas, we use thousands of strategies for making sense of the world around us.

Executive Functions include 3 of the 7! Here are the 7 big categories:

  • Attention
  • Organizational Skills
  • Working Memory or Short-Term Memory
  • Auditory Processing
  • Visual Processing
  • Sensory Processing
  • Long-Term Memory

In the next few posts, I will unpack each of these 7 cognitive skills areas. I will cover where in the brain we run those processes and how they impact learning. Of course, I will attempt to explain what we can do for learning if something goes wrong in with one or more of those cognitive skills.
